A weak ash emission was reported in Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island on Tuesday morning, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
According to Phivolcs, the volcanic activity began at around 5:55 a.m. Grayish ash plumes rose up to 350 meters above the summit crater before drifting toward the southwest, as recorded by the IP camera at the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory–Canlaon City (KVO-CC) station.
Alert Level 2 remains in effect over Kanlaon Volcano, indicating increased unrest and the possibility of further volcanic activity.
Monitoring data showed one recorded volcanic earthquake. Sulfur dioxide emissions were measured at 1,484 tons per day as of January 5. Weak steaming was also observed, with plumes reaching up to 75 meters high and drifting east-southeast.
Ground deformation data indicate swelling of the volcano, a sign of magma movement beneath the surface.
Phivolcs advised residents, tourists, and local stakeholders to remain vigilant, stay updated through official advisories, and strictly follow safety guidelines issued by authorities.
Meanwhile, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) urged the public, especially those in areas of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental to take precautions against possible ashfall as the ash plume continues to drift southwest.
