Kanlaon Volcano spews 700-meter ash plumes anew; Alert Level 2 still up — PHIVOLCS
by Luwela Amor02 May 2026

Kanlaon Volcano spewed ash plumes anew on Saturday afternoon that rose 700 meters above the crater, The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.

The state volcanologists shared time lapse footage of the ash emission recorded at around 1:25 p.m of May 2.

Based on PHIVOLCS’ observation through its IP camera at the Kanlaon Volcano Observatory in Canlaon City, gray ash plumes were seen rising from the summit crater before drifting west-southwest.

”Time-lapse footage of ash emission from the Kanlaon Volcano summit crater that began at 01:25 PM today, 02 May 2026. This event generated grayish plumes that rose 700 meters above the crater before drifting west-southwest, as captured by IP camera at Kanlaon Volcano Observatory–Canlaon City (KVO-CC),” PHIVOLCS said.

The agency said the activity is consistent with ongoing volcanic unrest at Kanlaon Volcano, which has shown signs of increased activity in recent monitoring periods.

In its latest 24-hour monitoring report issued on May 1, PHIVOLCS recorded sulfur dioxide emissions at 1,602 tons per day. The agency also noted that the volcano’s edifice remains inflated, indicating continued internal pressure.

Authorities reiterated that Alert Level 2 remains in effect, meaning that magmatic unrest is ongoing and sudden explosive eruptions are still possible.

PHIVOLCS continues to remind the public to avoid the Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and remain alert to further advisories.
