A moderately explosive eruption occurred at Kanlaon Volcano on Sunday evening, marking the third such event recorded this year, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
PHIVOLCS said the eruption took place at the volcano’s summit at exactly 6:07 p.m.
The eruption generated an ash column that rose up to five kilometers above the crater before drifting toward the southeast and northeast. Earlier observations also noted ash being carried by winds toward nearby areas.
The state volcanologist said this is the third moderately explosive eruption at Kanlaon Volcano so far in 2026, following similar events recorded on February 19 and February 26.
Alert Level 2 remains in effect over Kanlaon Volcano, indicating increased unrest and the possibility of sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, as well as signs of potential magmatic activity.
Authorities also reiterated that entry into the four-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) around the volcano is strictly prohibited due to the risk of sudden eruptions and other volcanic hazards.
Kanlaon Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines, straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental on Negros Island.
