A moderately explosive eruption occurred at Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island on Saturday, October 10, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

In a social media post, PHIVOLCS said the eruption occurred at around 12:46 p.m. and ended at approximately 12:48 p.m.

According to PHIVOLCS, the eruption generated a plume that rose five to six kilometers above the summit crater before drifting north-northeast.

"The event generated a plume that rose 5-6 kilometers above the summit crater before drifting north-northeast, as visually recorded from the Lower Masulog Station (VKLM) Thermal IPCamera and Pandanon Station (VKPA) IPCamera," said PHIVOLCS.

Kanlaon Volcano remains under Alert Level 2, indicating an increased level of volcanic unrest.

Based on PHIVOLCS’ 24-hour monitoring from midnight on October 9 to midnight on October 10, the volcano recorded 16 volcanic earthquakes.

The agency also measured sulfur dioxide emissions at 2,138 metric tons per day on Oct. 9.

Meanwhile, the volcano’s steam plume reached 900 meters above the crater and drifted southward, accompanied by strong steaming activity.
