Senator Jinggoy Estrada is now detained at the Quezon City Jail in Payatas after voluntarily surrendering on Monday to face an arrest warrant in connection with a plunder case linked to alleged irregularities in flood control projects.

According to a report by Val Gonzales on Tuesday, Estrada has been placed in the general population area together with co-accused Denryl Caesar Cortuna, Manny Bulusan, and Arturo Gonzales Jr.

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said the detainees were housed in a general population cell after being cleared medically. Under standard procedure, newly admitted detainees are required to stay in the general population for seven days before being assigned to specific cells.

Estrada and his co-accused arrived at the Quezon City Jail shortly after 8 p.m. on Monday, June 1.

He earlier surrendered to operatives of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG). The case involves allegations that Estrada received around P573 million in kickbacks linked flood control projects. The charge is non-bailable and carries the penalty of reclusion perpetua if proven.

Meanwhile, former Public Works Secretary Manny Bonoan is currently confined at the Philippine National Police General Hospital in Camp Crame after experiencing elevated blood pressure.

Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla earlier assured the public that no special treatment would be given to Estrada and his co-accused while detained at the BJMP facility in Payatas.

Authorities have yet to confirm whether Estrada will share a cell with former senator Bong Revilla Jr., who is also currently detained.

Revilla is scheduled for a hearing at the Sandiganbayan’s Third Division on Tuesday morning in connection with a separate malversation case. He has filed a waiver of appearance and is not required to attend the proceedings.
