The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has suspended for 30 days the operations of a passenger jeepney involved in a fatal road crash that killed a female motorcycle rider in San Mateo, Rizal on August 20.

The LTFRB said it has also issued a show cause order (SCO) against the jeepney operator and directed the surrender of the vehicle’s license plate before the first hearing of the case scheduled on September 4.

Acting LTFRB Chairman Atty. Greg G. Pua said the suspension will remain in effect pending the outcome of the agency’s investigation into the crash.

Based on the initial police investigation, the driver of the jeepney, with license plate TWS 560, was allegedly speeding while attempting to pick up additional passengers.

The driver was also reportedly overtaking several vehicles and occupying the opposite lane when he collided with a motorcycle driven by a 43-year-old woman.

The victim was rushed to the nearest hospital but was declared dead due to serious injuries sustained in the collision.

In its show cause order, the LTFRB directed the operator to explain in notarized writing why the franchise should not be revoked over alleged violations, including the employment of a reckless driver.

The LTFRB clarified that its administrative investigation is separate from the criminal investigation being conducted by other agencies, including the Philippine National Police, which will determine the driver’s possible criminal liability.

“We are saddened by this unfortunate incident and we in the LTFRB extend our deepest condolences to the family of the rider. We assure the family that we will expedite the investigation into this case in the interest of accountability and justice,” Pua said.

Meanwhile, Department of Transportation Secretary Giovanni “Banoy” Z. Lopez directed the LTFRB to ensure that all insurance benefits due to the victim are released at the soonest possible time.

The LTFRB said the investigation is being pursued to ensure accountability and provide justice to the victim’s family.
