A jeepney carrying 20 passengers crashed into a steel Meralco post along the southbound lane of Rizal Avenue near the Caloocan-Manila border on Saturday noon, according to DZRH reporter Edwin Duque.
The jeepney, which was plying the MCU–Libertad route and driven by Angelo Jose, lost control after its brakes allegedly failed. Jose said he decided to crash into the post to prevent the jeepney from hitting other vehicles.
Nine passengers were brought to the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), while the others were taken to Tondo Medical Center for medical attention.
One passenger seated beside the driver sustained serious injuries after the front portion of the jeepney was heavily damaged in the collision.
Other passengers claimed the jeepney was traveling at high speed from Manila toward Caloocan and allegedly failed to stop when it reached a traffic light.
Personnel from the Manila Police District (MPD) and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) responded to the scene after the crash, with heavy smoke reportedly coming from the jeepney.
The driver was brought to the police station as authorities investigate the incident and determine possible liability.
