Japan envoy, SFA Lazaro meet to discuss preps for PBBM’s State Visit to Japan

MANILA, Philippines – The Embassy of Japan in Manila and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) are now preparing for the upcoming State Visit of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. to Japan from May 26 to 29, 2026.

Japan’s Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya recently paid a courtesy call to DFA Secretary Maria Theresa P. Lazaro, and exchanged views on Japan-Philippines relations, as well as preparations for the State Visit.

According to the Embassy, Ambassador Endo conveyed Japan’s steadfast commitment to continue advancing cooperation, especially as preparations are underway for the upcoming State Visit of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.

This visit is expected to further strengthen friendly relations between Japan and the Philippines, the Embassy said.

“Pleased to have a meeting with DFA Secretary Theresa Lazaro as we discussed preparations for President Marcos Jr.’s State Visit to Japan in late May,” Endo posted on X.

Endo and Lazaro also tackled regional matters, including outcomes of the ASEAN Leaders’ Summit held in Cebu last May 6 to 8, 2026.

Both countries also agreed to further promote bilateral cooperation between Japan and the Philippines across a wide range of fields.

In her post on X, Lazaro said that discussions focused on possible deliverables to strengthen cooperation in energy, defense, security & other areas of mutual interest in order to ensure a productive visit.

According to a statement from Malacañang, Marcos and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos are scheduled for a State Visit to Japan, marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two states.

Japan and the Philippines formally established diplomatic ties on July 23, 1956.

During the visit, Marcos is expected to hold a summit meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, to discuss key regional and global issues, particularly on maritime security, food security and energy.

According to the Palace, the First Couple will be received by Their Majesties, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, at the Imperial Palace for a welcome ceremony, state call and state banquet.

Marcos is also expected to meet with Japanese business leaders and members of the Filipino community in Japan, as part of his official engagements, the Palace mentioned.
