The Japanese government has approved a sharp quintupled increase in visa fees for foreign nationals, marking the first revision of such charges in nearly half a century, officials said.

The decision was made during a cabinet meeting on Friday and revises a related cabinet order that has kept visa fees unchanged since 1978.

Under the new schedule, the fee for a single-entry visa will rise from 3,000 yen to 15,000 yen, while multiple-entry visas will increase from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen.

The updated rates will apply to visa applications submitted on or after July 1.

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said the adjustment reflects rising prices and broader economic conditions, adding that the government does not expect the higher fees to have an immediate impact on inbound tourism.

The announcement has prompted questions among prospective travelers in some countries, including the Philippines, where applicants for temporary visitor visas are currently not charged an embassy visa fee.

As of writing, there has been no official statement indicating any change to existing fee exemptions for Philippine passport holders after the new rates take effect.

However, applicants may still be subject to separate costs such as service charges from visa application centers, processing fees, and document handling expenses.

The Japanese government has not yet clarified whether long-standing bilateral arrangements or exemptions will be affected by the updated fee structure.
