In a talk with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro secured Iran’s assurance of safe passage for Philippine vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, announced the agency on Thursday, April 2.

“During the call, the Iranian Foreign Minister assured the Secretary that Iran will allow the safe, unhindered, and expeditious passage through the Strait of Hormuz of Philippine-flagged vessels, energy sources, and all Filipino seafarers,” the DFA’s statement read.

Not only does this agreement ensure the safety of Filipino seafarers working in the area, but it will also help secure sufficient energy sources for the country amid the global oil crisis, Foreign Affairs Secretary Lazaro noted.

“Given that the Philippines imports the majority of its energy requirements from the Middle East, these assurances from Iran will greatly facilitate the steady delivery of critical oil and fertilizer supplies to the Philippines,” the DFA wrote.

According to recent reports, the Philippines acquired 2.48 million barrels of crude oil from Russia through Petron Corporation to replenish domestic energy supplies.
