Some internet users reported experiencing connectivity problems Friday evening, Oct. 2, involving several internet service providers, including Globe at Home, PLDT, Converge and Smart.
Around 9 p.m., users reported slow or intermittent internet service.
The UP Diliman Network Helpdesk (DilNet) also issued an advisory Friday, saying one of the undersea cable segments between the Philippines and Singapore had gone offline.
“We have been informed that one of the undersea cable segments between PH and SG is offline. Since most of our upstream ISPs connect through these major information pipelines, please expect increased latencies and intermittent performance, especially if the sites being accessed are hosted offshore,” DilNet said.
DilNet said the issue was not specific to the University of the Philippines Diliman and that other local internet service providers and telecommunications companies could also experience slowdowns depending on their primary links.
Initial details indicated that cable segments connecting the Philippines to Singapore and Hong Kong had gone offline.
The disruption affected international data traffic routed through Southeast and East Asian server nodes, resulting in bottlenecks.
The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) also began investigating and monitoring the fiber line breaks.
As of Friday night, there was no confirmed timetable for the full restoration of the affected cable segments.
