Incoming National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Atty. Melvin Matibag has pledged to modernize the bureau, improve public services, and ensure impartial, evidence-based investigations.

In an interview on DZRH’s Dos Por Dos, Matibag said upon his conversation with Secretary Eric Vida, he emphasizes adapting the NBI to emerging criminal trends, including cybercrimes, online scams, and technology-driven financial fraud.

Matibag also highlighted streamlining public access to NBI clearances, proposing digital solutions to reduce long queues and delays.

“Kung anong ebidensya, saan tayo dadalhin, doon po tayo tutungo,” Matibag said, underscoring his commitment to impartiality despite past political affiliations. He also plans close coordination with the Office of the Ombudsman, Department of Justice, PNP, DICT, and other law enforcement agencies.

Acknowledging the challenges of being an outsider, Matibag said he will rely on the expertise of NBI personnel while fostering collaboration.

“Ano man po ang success na aking matatanggap, isa rin pong tagumpay ng ahensya at ng bawat isang membro po ng ahensya ng National Bureau of Investigation.”

He further committed to reviewing the welfare of NBI staff, particularly healthcare benefits, noting that personnel well-being is crucial for effective service.

Matibag’s tenure is expected to focus on modernization, inter-agency coordination, and improving transparency and efficiency in the bureau’s operations.

Matibag is set to take his oath as the new NBI Director today, February 20.
