Hundreds of protesters, including individuals believed to be affiliated with Iglesia ni Cristo (INC), gathered early Tuesday at Liwasang Bonifacio in Ermita, Manila, for a planned anti-corruption demonstration despite intermittent heavy rain.
According to a report by RH Tina Nolasco, LED screens, tents and a makeshift stage were set up early by organizers and participants at the site throughout the early morning hours, braving downpours as preparations pushed through.
As of 6:30 a.m., protesters were already watching a presentation prepared for the rally, which centered on calls for accountability and stronger action against corruption.
The gathering was described by participants as a “peace rally.”
Police maintained a visible presence in the area. The Manila Police District (MPD) deployed around 200 personnel to secure the vicinity and ensure order during the activity.
MPD spokesperson Philip Ines said protesters began arriving shortly after midnight, around 12:12 a.m., and were allowed to assemble and set up along the road even without a permit.
He noted that Liwasang Bonifacio is designated as a freedom park, where public assemblies are permitted.
Rain continued to fall as of 7:05 a.m., but did not deter participants, including those reportedly linked to INC, from proceeding with the demonstration.
Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) warned motorists to expect slow-moving traffic near Liwasang Bonifacio and the EDSA People Power Monument, where separate gatherings were also reported early Tuesday.
Authorities advised the public to take alternate routes as crowds were expected to increase throughout the day.
