The Senate impeachment court on Thursday granted the House prosecution panel’s request to subpoena representatives of seven banks and seven insurance companies for Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial.
The court also approved the prosecution’s request to subpoena a representative of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).
The move came after lead prosecutor and Batangas Rep. Gerville Luistro announced that the prosecution would no longer present former Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV as a witness in the impeachment trial.
The seven banks identified by the prosecution are:
- Land Bank of the Philippines
- Asia United Bank
- Philippine Savings Bank
- Metropolitan Bank and Trust Co. (Metrobank)
- Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI)
- Philippine National Bank (PNB)
- BDO Unibank
The prosecution also sought the appearance of representatives from the following companies:
- Prudential Life
- Allianz
- Manufacturers Life Insurance Co. (Manulife)
- FWD Life Insurance
- BPI-AIA Life Assurance Corp.
- BDO Securities Corp.
- BDO Life Assurance Co.
Luistro said the BIR representative would be presented on Monday, October 5, followed by the representatives of the banks and insurance and financial companies on Tuesday, October 6.
“For Monday, October 5, we will be presenting the BIR. And for Tuesday, October 6, we will be presenting the representatives of banks and insurance companies,” Luistro told the impeachment court.
“And it is in this light, your honor, that we respectfully reiterate our request for assurance of subpoena to BIR as well as the representatives of banks and insurance companies,” he added.
She said the bank representatives would be presented in the same sequence indicated in the prosecution’s subpoena request.
Luistro also reiterated the prosecution’s request for the issuance of subpoenas to compel the appearance and production of records by the BIR and the identified financial institutions.
Presiding Officer Sen. Francis Escudero subsequently granted the prosecution’s request for subpoenas duces tecum et ad testificandum, covering the BIR and the identified banks, insurance companies, and financial institutions.
The financial records are expected to form part of the prosecution’s presentation of evidence on the allegations under Article II of the Articles of Impeachment, which include claims involving unexplained wealth, false statements in Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net (SALN) Worth, and alleged failure to divest from business interests.
