The impeachment court has given Vice President Sara Duterte until June 1, 2026, to respond to the articles of impeachment filed against her, following the formal issuance and service of summons.
The summons was reportedly served at around 10:40 a.m. and officially received by the Vice President, according to Senate records.
In a manifestation before the chamber, Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano confirmed the procedural timeline and deadline for the respondent’s answer.
“Earlier today, 20 May 2026, the summons in relation to the Articles of Impeachment filed against VP Sara Duterte was duly served upon respondent Vice President Sara Z. Duterte,” Cayetano said.
He explained that under the applicable rules, the vice president has 10 calendar days from receipt of the summons to file her answer, which would have originally fallen on May 30. However, since the deadline falls on a Saturday, the period is extended to the next working day.
“Accordingly, the deadline for respondent to file her answer is on Monday, 01 June 2026,” he said.
Cayetano also noted that once the prosecution panel receives the answer, it will have five calendar days to file a reply should it opt to do so.
The Senate President emphasized the need to prioritize the impeachment timetable alongside the legislative calendar, as preparations for further proceedings continue.
The impeachment trial is expected to proceed following the submission of pleadings and completion of preliminary requirements.
