The House Committee on Women and Gender Equality has condemned the misogynistic, sexualized, and personal attacks directed at San Juan City Representative Ysabel Maria “Bel” Zamora following her participation in the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte.
In a statement, committee chairperson Rep. Ma. Rene Ann Lourdes “Ann” Matibag said political criticism should focus on issues and arguments rather than a woman’s appearance, voice, gender, or mannerisms.
“Public officials should be questioned, challenged, and held accountable. Vigorous disagreement and public scrutiny are essential to democracy. But criticism must remain about the issues,” Matibag said.
The committee also stressed that women in public service should not have to “shrink themselves, soften their voices, or apologize for taking up space” to avoid ridicule.
The statement came after Zamora faced online criticism over her manner of questioning during the impeachment trial. Zamora brushed off the remarks, saying, “I don’t care if they bash me. I’m here to do my job.” She also told her critics, “Seriously, they should get a life.”
The committee urged public officials, political supporters, media, and citizens to keep political discourse centered on “issues, arguments, and actions” and reject gender-based harassment.
“To Cong. Bel Zamora, stand your ground. Keep speaking. Keep serving. The Committee stands with you,” Matibag said.
