House prosecutor and Bicol Saro Party-list Rep. Terry Ridon on Monday urged the public to support the pursuit of truth and accountability as the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte is set to begin at 2 p.m. on July 6.

In a video statement, Ridon, one of 11 House prosecutors in the case, said the proceedings should allow evidence to speak for itself as the Senate impeachment court formally opens the trial against Duterte.

“Sa araw po na ito, kailangan po nating pumili,” Ridon said, calling on the public to take a stand.

“Kung para ba tayo sa tama, o para sa mali. Kung para ba tayo sa katotohanan, o sa pagtatakip ng katotohanan. Kung para tayo sa pananagutan, o sa walang pananagutan. Kung para tayo sa kasalukuyan at hinaharap, o sa madilim na nakaraan," he added.

He added that in the coming days, the prosecution would present evidence in what he described as a historic proceeding, and appealed to the public to support efforts by both public and private prosecutors.

“Sa susunod pong mga araw, hayaan po nating magsalita ang ebidensya. Hayaan po nating magsalita ang katotohanan,” he appealed.

“Kaya samahan niyo po kami na piliin ang tama. Piliin ang katotohanan. Piliin ang pananagutan. At sa huli’t huli, piliin ang bayan,” he said.

Duterte is the first Vice President of the Philippines to be impeached by the House of Representatives twice and subsequently tried by the impeachment court.

Duterte is facing four articles of impeachment, which include allegations of misuse of confidential funds, bribery involving Department of Education (DepEd) officials, issuing death threats, and unexplained wealth.
