The House Justice Committee is set to conclude its impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte on April 29, with lawmakers expected to deliberate and possibly vote on whether there is probable cause to elevate the case to the Senate impeachment court.

The final phase of the proceedings will focus on key pieces of evidence, including alleged death threats made by the vice president and sealed tax records, which committee members say could be crucial in determining whether the impeachment complaint should proceed.

Committee discussions will also address reported death threats allegedly directed at President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez, which have surfaced as part of the broader context of the hearings.

Lawmakers are examining documentary and digital evidence submitted by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) regarding alleged threats attributed to Duterte in November 2024. The committee has issued a subpoena requiring the NBI to present all relevant materials for evaluation.

In addition, members are set to decide whether to open a sealed box containing the income tax returns of Vice President Duterte and her husband or instead endorse its transfer to the Senate should the impeachment complaint advance.

Unlike previous hearings, the April 29 session will rely solely on the NBI as the resource panel. Committee members are also expected to determine whether the accumulated evidence meets the threshold of probable cause, which would formally transmit the impeachment complaint to the Senate for trial.
