The House of Representatives is considering extending its plenary sessions by one week to ensure the timely passage of the proposed 2026 national budget, Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III revealed on Tuesday.
In an interview with Dos Por Dos, Dy acknowledged that the chamber is now entering the final week of plenary deliberations under the legislative calendar. The House is originally set to adjourn on October 10, the same day allocated for the period of amendments.
Dy explained that he plans to consult members of the chamber on whether a one-week extension is necessary. He stressed that any decision would be guided by the priority of approving a spending plan that is not only timely but also “orderly, clean, and accountable.”
According to him, House members remain focused on scrutinizing the proposal to uphold transparency in the use of funds. He noted that debates have been running until the early hours of the morning to thoroughly examine allocations.
House Speaker Dy pointed out that the significant difference this time is that the ₱255 billion reduced from flood control has already been reallocated to priority programs and projects.
The budget distribution was also presented by Usec. Atty. Claire Castro during a Palace press conference on Monday. According to Castro, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. directed the allocation of a significant ₱255 billion in funding for the agriculture and health sectors.
Under the current legislative calendar, Congress is scheduled to hold sessions until October 10, the same day set for the period of amendments.
