The House Justice Committee has confirmed it will continue examining the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, despite a petition filed by her camp with the Supreme Court seeking to halt the process.
Justice Committee Chair Gerville Luistro emphasized that the committee’s role is to determine whether there is probable cause for impeachment, not to pass judgment.
Luistro also said that the Senate, as the designated impeachment court, is the body tasked with rendering judgment.
Committee member and Bicol Saro Party-list Representative Terry Ridon described the Supreme Court petition as a “diversionary tactic” and affirmed that the committee will not be intimidated in pursuing accountability for serious allegations against the vice president.
The impeachment proceedings stem from multiple complaints alleging misconduct in office, which, if found credible, could lead to a trial in the Senate.
Analysts note that the case highlights ongoing tensions between the legislative and executive branches, as well as the heightened political scrutiny surrounding high-ranking officials.
