The House of Representatives of the Philippines Committee on Ethics and Privileges has given Bong Suntay 10 days to respond to ethics complaints filed against him over alleged misogynistic remarks.
Committee chair JC Abalos said the lawmaker would be given the opportunity to explain his side during the panel’s ongoing proceedings. The hearing was attended by Suntay as the committee began its review of the complaints.
The ethics complaints were filed by Gabriela Women’s Party-list and several women’s groups, who criticized Suntay for making what they described as sexist and disrespectful comments directed at actress Anne Curtis.
Earlier, the House leadership had already ordered the Ethics Committee to investigate Suntay’s remarks made during a hearing of the House Committee on Justice, even before a formal complaint was filed. The panel will determine whether the lawmaker violated ethical standards of the chamber.
