The House Committee on Ethics and Privileges ordered the takedown of 24 of Cavite 4th District Rep. Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga’s social media posts on Tuesday, warning that noncompliance will lead to a stiffer penalty.

Barzaga must delete the posts within 24 hours of the committee report’s approval on Monday. If he fails to comply, the ethics committee will deliberate on possible consequent sanctions.

“Walang mali sa pag-criticize or sa pagpo-post sa positions ng gobyerno dahil karapatan nating lahat ‘yan. Lalong-lalo na kung isa ka pong public official dito sa Kongreso, trabaho mo rin ‘yan. But we must do so within the bounds of the Code of Conduct,” Ethics Committee Chair and 4Ps Party-list Rep. JC Abalos said.

“So ‘yun po ang napakahalaga. We are not suppressing the free exercise of speech, but we must draw a line kung ano po ang genuine freedom of expression, ang genuine criticism at opposition, compared to improper conduct,” he added.

Among the posts flagged for deletion contain expression against government officials and institutions, a so-called “joke” to burn down the House of Representatives, and a number of lewd photographs.

With 249 voting in favor, five voting against, and 11 abstaining, the House approved a 60-day suspension on Barzaga over the said posts.
