Additional benefits and support mechanisms for solo parents and their children are being pushed in the House of Representatives, coinciding with the observance of National Solo Parents Day.

Quezon City 5th District Representative PM Vargas has filed two measures aimed at strengthening the country’s support system for solo parents, particularly young mothers and working caregivers.

Under House Bill 3413, Vargas proposes the establishment of a Refuge and Assistance Center in every province, city, and municipality. The centers will provide temporary shelter, free medical services, and prenatal care for pregnant individuals aged 21 and below who may have been abandoned by their partners. The measure seeks to ensure immediate protection and assistance for vulnerable young mothers.

Meanwhile, House Bill 3404, or the Free Childcare Services Act, proposes the creation of free childcare centers for children aged three years old and below.

The program is designed to help solo parents, particularly working mothers without household help, by providing safe childcare support that would allow them to continue employment or livelihood activities.

Vargas said both proposals aim to establish a more comprehensive support system for solo parents and their children, addressing both health and childcare needs while promoting economic independence.

The measures are expected to undergo committee deliberations as lawmakers continue efforts to strengthen social protection programs for solo parents nationwide.
