Senator Risa Hontiveros said she is “seriously considering” running for a national post in the 2028 elections, including a possible presidential bid, as she acknowledged growing encouragement from various sectors and supporters.

In a press conference on Friday, June 19, Hontiveros said she is actively preparing for the possibility of seeking higher office, stressing the need for a strong and unified opposition candidate who can present a credible alternative to voters.

“I am seriously considering it, preparing for that possibility,” Hontiveros said. “It is really necessary na magkaroon kami from our ranks ng strongest, best, most attractive, and hopeful offer sa ating mga kababayan.”

She emphasized that her political group aims to consolidate support behind a single candidate with the strongest chance of winning, noting that unity will be key heading into the 2028 polls.

“I’m looking forward to that moment na end of this year or at the very latest, first quarter next year, magkaisa kami… there can be only one para may fighting chance,” she added.

Hontiveros also pointed to public support indicators such as survey results as a key factor in determining viability, saying broad voter backing will be central in deciding who the group will endorse.

“Kasi yun naman yung pinaka-eminent factor… yung wide support mula sa ating mga kababayan,” she said.

The senator said discussions within her circle are ongoing and expressed hope that by late this year or early next year, a consensus will be reached on a unified candidate for the 2028 elections.

Hontiveros, a longtime opposition figure and former social welfare official, has previously been floated as a potential contender for higher office, though she has not formally announced any candidacy.
