Senator Risa Hontiveros downplayed questions about political ambitions and alliance shifts, saying the priority following recent developments inside the Senate is restoring institutional stability rather than engaging in electoral discussions.
Speaking to reporters on May 14, Hontiveros said the Senate must first address internal disruptions and reinforce democratic processes before any political planning can be considered.
“I can hardly even think about that right now,” she said when asked about possible presidential aspirations.
She added that the immediate priority is consolidating democratic institutions and addressing concerns over perceived irregularities in governance and legal processes.
Hontiveros also raised concerns about actions that may undermine democratic norms, including disputes over legislative procedures and enforcement of warrants involving public officials.
“These are issues that must be corrected so we can return to a stable democratic footing,” she said.
The senator emphasized that rebuilding the Senate’s credibility is essential before any broader political direction can be discussed.
“We need to put our house in order first,” she said.
Hontiveros maintained that lawmakers must focus on governance and accountability as investigations into recent Senate-related incidents continue.
