Senator Risa Hontiveros expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, extending condolences to their families, teammates, and the Ateneo community as investigations into the incident continue.

Hontiveros said the tragedy left an “unbearable” sense of loss, noting that no words could fully comfort those affected.

She offered sympathy to the bereaved families and emphasized that her office is open to provide any assistance they may need.

“Bilang isang biyuda, minsan na rin akong nagpaalam nang masyadong maaga sa isang mahal sa buhay,” said the Senator.

She also called on the public to respect the memory of the two athletes and to allow their families privacy as they mourn.

At the same time, Hontiveros urged that the ongoing investigations be allowed to proceed, expressing hope that the full truth behind the circumstances of the tragedy would be uncovered.

“Habang nagpapatuloy ang mga imbestigasyon, umaasa akong mailalabas ang buong katotohanan tungkol sa mga pangyayaring humantong sa trahedyang ito.”

If negligence or lapses are found, she said those responsible must be held accountable, adding that the victims are owed answers and justice.
