Hontiveros calls out Meta: ‘Yung basura niyo, linisin niyo’

Senator Risa Hontiveros on Thursday called on Meta to take greater responsibility for harmful content after videos and photos of the August 18 shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University circulated on its social media platforms.
Meta is the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and other social media platforms.
“Meta itself has to do better. Ang laki ng pakinabang nila sa platform na ‘yan, hindi nila dapat hayaan na ang mga nagpapaviral sa ganyang klaseng content or, worst, mga malign actors na gumagamit ng mga ganyang klaseng content para sa serious violence o para pa sa NVE (Nihilistic Violent Extremism) ay magamit ito,” Hontiveros said.
During a hearing of the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations, and Gender Equality, which she chairs, Hontiveros said Meta should not leave the responsibility of addressing such content entirely to the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC).
“Wala man dito physically ang Meta, nagko-call out ang komite sa kanila…‘Yung kalat niyo, ‘yung basura niyo sa inyong powerful platform, linisin niyo. Huwag niyong iwan lahat sa CICC,” she added.
