Bus terminals along EDSA in Cubao saw an unusually low turnout of travelers on Wednesday, as the expected exodus for Holy Week failed to materialize during the early morning hours, as reported by RH Val Gonzales.
Dispatchers at several stations along both the northbound and southbound lanes reported a significant dip in passenger volume compared to previous years. According to terminal data, only about 1,700 passengers passed through between midnight and 7:30 a.m.
In contrast, terminal staff noted that during the same period in previous Lenten seasons, passenger counts typically exceeded 3,000 by mid-morning. The lack of crowds left the terminal areas populated more by idling taxis and motorcycle taxis (habal-habal) than by provincial commuters.
One terminal dispatcher noted a visible decline in commuters compared to previous Lenten seasons, expressing uncertainty over whether a surge would occur tomorrow since many travelers may still be completing their work shifts today.
While the foot traffic remained light for walk-in passengers, travel options are becoming polarized. Terminal officials confirmed that air-conditioned buses are already fully booked through April 5. However, seats remain available on ordinary, non-air-conditioned buses heading to Bicol region provinces, including Camarines Sur and Albay.
Meanwhile in Manila, some bus companies have begun scaling back the frequency of their trips to adjust to the sluggish demand and avoid operating near-empty vehicles, according to RH Boy Gonzales
Authorities expect a potential surge in commuters by Wednesday evening or early Maundy Thursday as the public holidays officially begin.
