Manila is set to make history as it hosts the country’s first-ever WTA 125 tournament, the Philippine Women’s Open (PWO), from January 26 to 31 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center. This milestone event places the Philippines on the global tennis map, welcoming top female players from around the world.

The Philippine Women’s Open is a prestigious addition to the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour, offering players both global ranking points and a prize pool.

The WTA 125 category serves as a “gateway” tournament, where rising stars and seasoned veterans compete to climb the international rankings and gain recognition on the world stage.

Local talent will also take center stage. Over three days, top Filipino players will compete for national ranking points and a chance to earn a wildcard entry into the PWO main draw.

“The matches will not only test the facilities of the tennis center but also serve as a qualifying event for local players aiming to compete in the Philippine Women’s Open,” said Dyan Castillejo, Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) board member and co-tournament director of the PWO.

Top Filipino stars Alex Eala and rising talent Tennielle Madis of M’lang, Cotabato, have already been granted wildcards, exempting them from the national playoffs.

However, Eala’s participation is still uncertain due to her schedule at the Australian Open, which overlaps with the PWO main draw.

The tournament has attracted 24 players from 19 countries, including Croatian Olympic silver medalist Donna Vekic, who defeated Eala at the recent ASB Classic. Fans can expect a high level of competition and a showcase of world-class tennis right in Manila.
