Heightened security measures have been implemented in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte, following delays in the transportation of Automated Counting Machines (ACMs) and other essential election materials.
According to a report by DZRH provincial correspondent Jun Dimacutac, as of 9:15 a.m., the voting process had not yet started due to a large crowd blocking and delaying the transport of election paraphernalia.
The group involved are reportedly supporters of a rival mayoral candidate who are opposing the designated members of the electoral board. The disruption has affected more than 30 barangays in the area.
Assistant Election Officer Haiden Camid said the election paraphernalia were supposed to be segregated as early as 2:00 a.m., but a group blocked the national highway in Barangay Poblacion, Dalican as dawn approached.
He added that the voting in remote areas may be further delayed if the situation persists.
Following the situation, the Maguindanao del Norte Provincial Police Office (PPO) released a statament and said it "understands the frustrations and concerns of the protesters," assuring the public that it is coordinating with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and other relevant agencies.
"We are committed to maintaining peace and order while ensuring that the electoral process proceeds smoothly and transparently," the Maguindanao del Norte Police said.
"To this end, we have implemented heightened security measures in the area to facilitate safe discussions and negotiations. Our priority remains the safety and welfare of all individuals involved, as well as the uninterrupted conduct of the electoral process," it added.
The police are actively coordinating with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), the local government unit (LGU), and community leaders to address the issues and expedite the delivery of ACMs and other election materials.
"It is crucial that we work together to find a resolution that honors the democratic process while addressing the concerns raised by the community," the police added.Meanwhile, the public is urged to remain calm and patient.
"The Maguindanao del Norte PPO and AFP are here to serve and protect, ensuring that everyone’s rights are respected while maintaining the peace," the statement said.
"We will continue to provide updates as the situation develops and assure the community that their voices are heard and valued," it concluded.
As of 12 p.m., Dimacutac reported that the tension caused by the barricading supporters of rival candidates has subsided, and the election paraphernalia have already been distributed.
