In an exclusive interview on DZRH Television's Expert’s Opinion, licensed psychologist and psychotherapist Ms. Hazel Malazarte explained both the benefits and limitations of healing one’s inner child.

As Malazarte stated in the interview, it is a process of understanding early childhood experiences that continue to influence how a person thinks and behaves in adulthood.

Based on research, trauma can begin as early as when a child is still developing in the womb, Malazarte said.

These unresolved experiences can affect various aspects of life, including romantic relationships, family dynamics, friends, and work.

She stated, “Kaya paglaki natin ang nangyari, medyo na-challenge na tayo sa mga bagay. Kaya nagiging reaksyon natin, mga factors ay nagiging sensitibo tayo kung paano tayo mag-react sa ibang tao sa mga ganitong aspeto.”

She also noted that a wounded inner child may develop from experiences such as neglect, abandonment, bullying, and other painful situations during childhood.

Recognizing these experiences helps individuals understand how they cope today and how they can begin to heal by giving themselves the care and support they once lacked.

She added, “Dito napapasok na kailangan, dapat 'yung gagawin nating pag-heal ng inner child, dapat wala tayong nasasagasaang responsibilidad niyo bilang good payer sa bangko o mga accountabilities natin. Hindi dapat ito taliwas. Naggo-grow ka pa rin, naghi-heal ka pa rin.”

Malazarte emphasized that healing should not become a form of avoidance. As people process their experiences, they may sometimes lose sight of personal boundaries in their attempt to give themselves what they feel they deserve. This is why growth must accompany healing. As she explained, indulge in what you deserve, but still have limitations.
