The Government Service Insurance System has launched a solar loan program offering up to ₱500,000 for members and pensioners as rising electricity costs, linked to global tensions including the US-Iran conflict, continue to drive up power prices.

GSIS President and CEO Wick Veloso announced the initiative on DZRH’s Special on Saturday on April 25, 2026, saying it is part of efforts to expand renewable energy use while easing the impact of higher utility bills on households.

“As we see that the price of power is directly impacted with the war in the Middle East, agaran po ang GSIS gumawa ng programa na magkaroon ng solar loan para po sa ating mga miyembro,” Veloso said.

The program covers about 2.7 million beneficiaries nationwide, including active members and pensioners, who may borrow up to ₱500,000 at 5% annual interest payable over five years. Lower loan amounts are allowed depending on need and capacity to pay.

Veloso said the maximum loan corresponds to an estimated 6-kilowatt solar system, enough to supply electricity for a typical home with basic appliances, while smaller systems can cover essential usage.

Applications require only a supplier quotation or proof of installation, with GSIS processing applications in about three days through a fully digital system accessible via mobile phones and offices nationwide.

Veloso said the program was partly shaped by GSIS projects in remote “last mile schools,” where solar power helped address lack of electricity and improve learning conditions.
