Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke, a high-energy big man whose early promise was slowed by injuries in recent seasons, has died at age 29, his sports agency confirmed. He died May 12, 2026. The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

Clarke, the No. 21 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft out of Gonzaga, quickly established himself as one of the league’s most efficient young forwards.

The 6-foot-8 forward was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team after averaging 12.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, marks that remained his career highs.

His career trajectory, however, was disrupted by injuries. Clarke suffered a torn Achilles tendon that limited him to six games in the 2023-24 season.

He appeared in just two games the following season due to lingering calf and knee issues, raising uncertainty about his long-term durability.

Off the court, Clarke faced legal trouble shortly before his death. On April 1, 2026, he was arrested in Arkansas following an alleged high-speed chase in which authorities said he exceeded 100 miles per hour.

He faced charges including improper passing, possession and trafficking of a controlled substance, fleeing and speeding. Authorities said a large quantity of kratom was recovered.

Ultimately known for his athleticism, shot-blocking and ability to finish around the rim, Clarke became a key contributor in Memphis’ rebuilding years. The Grizzlies rewarded him with a four-year, $50 million contract extension in 2022, signaling his role as part of the team’s young core.
