A grass fire erupted on the slopes of Taal Volcano Island on Friday evening, January 31.

Upon receipt of reports regarding the incident, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), through the Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog, immediately deployed maritime patrol assets to conduct continuous monitoring of the affected area. This is to ensure that no individuals, vessels, or unauthorized personnel approach or attempt to go near the island, “given the potential risks associated with volcanic activity and reduced visibility caused by smoke.”

“As a precautionary safety measure, no suppression of fire operations will be conducted at this time to prevent exposing responders to unnecessary hazards,” the Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog said.

The said agency is closely monitoring the grass fire incident in coordination with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the concerned local government units (LGUs), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), and other partner agencies.

Authorities continue to maintain heightened vigilance and real-time coordination to ensure maritime safety. As a precaution, fisherfolk and the general public are strongly advised to observe all advisories and avoid the vicinity of Taal Lake Island until further notice.

As of writing, there are no reported injuries or casualties from the incident.
