A Grade 9 student has been turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) women and children protection desk for further inquiry after a 17-year-old learner was stabbed in San Carlos City on Tuesday afternoon, police said.
Police Lt. Col. Nazer Canja, chief of the San Carlos City Police Station, said the victim was riding a motorcycle in Barangay 2, Teacher’s Village, when he was attacked and stabbed in the abdomen by the suspect.
Canja said investigators are looking into reports that the suspect had been monitoring the victim’s movements outside the school premises before carrying out the attack. The two are reportedly students of Julio Ledesma National High School.
The victim remains confined in a hospital and is undergoing treatment, authorities said.
The suspect has been turned over for custody and will be endorsed to the DSWD’s Women and Children Protection Desk in the city for proper processing and further assessment.
In a separate statement, the Schools Division Office of San Carlos City confirmed the incident involving the Grade 9 learner of Julio Ledesma National High School that occurred outside school grounds on June 23.
The division said it immediately coordinated with school officials to ensure the safety and welfare of those involved, adding that the school had earlier conducted discussions and debriefing sessions on learner safety and security concerns.
It also noted that the student had previously raised a concern with a teacher regarding a possible threat involving other students, which was scheduled for follow-up discussion but was not completed before classes ended.
Authorities said the circumstances surrounding the incident are still under review as part of an ongoing investigation.
The Schools Division Office said it is working with school officials, parents, and concerned agencies while implementing additional safety and psychosocial interventions within the school community.
It also urged parents and guardians to maintain open communication with their children and remain involved in matters affecting their safety and well-being, as it assured that updates will be released through official channels.
