Filipino swimmer Gary Bejino made history once again as he delivered the Philippines’ first gold medal at the 13th ASEAN Para Games, leaving fans and teammates alike in awe of his remarkable performance.

Competing in the Men’s 400m freestyle S6 finals, Bejino didn’t just clinch the gold—he shattered the Para Games record with a time of 5:32.08, marking his fourth career gold at the Games and his third consecutive win in the 400m freestyle event.

Adding to the celebration, fellow Filipino swimmer Ernie Gawilan secured the nation’s second gold, bringing home his 10th career gold medal.

Gawilan dominated the Men’s 400m freestyle S7, touching the wall at 5:02.39, reinforcing his status as one of the country’s most decorated Paralympians.

The day, however, was not without bittersweet moments. The Philippine women’s 3x3 basketball team fought valiantly but fell short against host Thailand, 12-5, earning the silver medal.

Despite the loss, it was a historic achievement as it marked the first time the Philippine women’s 3x3 squad competed for a gold in the ASEAN Para Games.

The multi-sport event is now in full swing following a grand opening ceremony on Tuesday night at His Majesty the King’s 80th Birthday Anniversary Stadium.

The Philippine delegation was proudly led by two-time Paralympian and wheelchair racer Jerrold Mangliwan, who carried the national flag, setting the tone for what promises to be a showcase of skill, perseverance, and heart.

With Bejino and Gawilan already making waves, Team Philippines is off to a golden start, hinting at a strong overall performance in Thailand.
