Alex Eala delivered exactly what was expected of her—and more—storming to the women’s singles tennis gold medal at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games and reaffirming her status as the region’s undisputed queen of the court.

Seeded No. 1 and ranked 53rd in the WTA, Eala imposed her authority from the opening serve, dismantling Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew in straight sets on center court.

The 20-year-old Filipina wasted little time asserting control, racing to a commanding 6–1 win in the opening set with a blend of heavy groundstrokes and precise shot placement that left her opponent scrambling.

Sawangkaew, buoyed by home support, attempted a fightback in the second set and briefly drew level at 2–2.

But Eala calmly shifted gears, raising the tempo and tightening her game to reel off the crucial points that mattered. She closed the match 6–2, sealing a clinical victory that underlined her composure, maturity, and championship pedigree.

With the triumph, Eala etched her name into Philippine tennis history as only the third Filipina to capture the SEA Games women’s singles crown, following the footsteps of Pia Tamayo, who ruled the event in the 1981 Manila Games, and Maricris Fernandez, who claimed gold in the 1999 Brunei edition.

The historic moment unfolded before the watchful eyes of Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino and hundreds of Filipino fans based in Thailand.

Their vocal and passionate support echoed across the venue, effectively neutralizing Sawangkaew’s home-court advantage and turning the final into a virtual home match for Eala.

For the Filipina tennis ace, the gold medal was not just another trophy—it was a statement. In a tournament where expectations were sky-high, Alex Eala delivered nothing but gold, further cementing her place as one of the brightest stars in Philippine sport.
