The Philippines captured its first-ever medal at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup as the Gilas Pilipinas women’s team finished with a silver.

The team, composed of Afril Bernardino, Chezka Apag, Mikka Cacho, and Kacey Dela Rosa, fell to Australia, 9-18, in the final.

Australia has now won six titles in nine editions of the tournament and featured Amy Atwell, Emma Clarke, Lara McSpadden, and Kristy Wallace, who also defeated the Philippine team in pool play, 21-10.

Gilas Pilipinas ended the tournament with a 3-2 record. The team beat Tonga, 19-10, in pool play, overcame Mongolia, 15-12, in the quarterfinals, and narrowly defeated Japan, 21-19, in the semifinals.

The Philippines has been participating in the regional FIBA 3x3 tournament since 2013, with the men’s team debuting that year and the women joining in 2019.

Prior to this silver medal finish, the highest placement was fourth, achieved by the men’s team in 2022 and the women’s team last year.

The historic podium finish marks a milestone for Philippine basketball in the 3x3 format.
