Gilas Pilipinas Men’s 3x3 secured its place in the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2026 main draw Thursday, finishing the qualifying stage with a perfect 2-0 record following a narrow 17-15 victory over Thailand.
The Filipinos opened their campaign earlier in the day with a 21-16 win against Maldives. Forward Sean Alter provided the interior presence and scoring punch necessary to reach the 21-point knockout target before the 10-minute regulation whistle.
The final qualifying match against Thailand proved more decorative of the physical toll of 3x3 basketball. Both teams struggled for offensive rhythm in a defensive grind that saw the Philippines cling to a two-point lead in the closing seconds to ensure the sweep.
With the qualifying rounds complete, the Philippines moves into Pool A for the main draw. The draw places the Filipinos alongside top-seeded Mongolia and No. 8 Chinese Taipei. Tournament play for the men’s division resumes Saturday.
The Gilas Women’s squad also begins its main draw journey Saturday. The team, featuring Kacey Dela Rosa, Mika Cacho, Cheska Apag, and veteran Afril Bernardino, is slated to compete in Pool C against Australia and Tonga.
