General Santos City has been placed under a state of calamity following a powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck the area on Monday morning, June 8, prompting urgent government action and disaster response measures.

According to a post by Vice Mayor Jose Edmar Yumang, the Sangguniang Panlungsod convened a 7th special session at the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to address the widespread impact of the quake.

The city council approved a resolution officially declaring a state of calamity and authorizing the use of the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund to support relief, rescue, and rehabilitation efforts.

“A Resolution Declaring A State Of Calamity In the City Of General Santos Following The Magnitude 7.8 Earthquake On June 8, 2026 And Authorizing The Utilization Of The Local Disaster Risk Reduction And Management Fund,” the measure stated.

City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Dr. Agripino “Bong” Dacera reported during the session that more than 20% of the population has been affected based on initial assessments.

Following the presentation of the situation report, Vice Mayor Yumang approved the resolution, enabling immediate mobilization of resources for emergency response operations.

Recent reports from national agencies indicate significant structural damage in General Santos City and surrounding areas, with casualties and injuries still being validated as search and rescue operations continue.

Authorities said aftershocks are ongoing, and residents are urged to remain vigilant as damage assessments and humanitarian assistance efforts continue across affected communities.
