Senate President Sherwin "Win" Gatchalian has filed a resolution seeking a Senate inquiry into the impact of online gaming platforms and social media on Filipino children, particularly their possible link to the increasing incidents of violence in schools.

Through proposed Senate Resolution No. 488, Gatchalian aims to examine existing policies governing children's digital exposure and identify legislative measures that would better protect minors from harmful online content.

The resolution was filed following a series of violent incidents involving students, including the fatal shooting at San Jose National High School in Tacloban City, where three learners lost their lives. According to police investigations, the suspects had reportedly been heavily exposed to GoreBox, a graphic violence-simulating online game that was later temporarily blocked by the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC).

Another recent case involved a stabbing incident at Cabaluay National High School in Zamboanga City, which left at least two students injured and renewed concerns over school safety and the potential influence of digital content on young people.

The resolution also cited data presented during a Senate Committee on Basic Education hearing last year, where the Department of Education (DepEd) reported that 103 bullying incidents escalated into campus violence between November 24, 2022, and April 7, 2025.

Gatchalian emphasized the need to determine whether existing laws and regulations are sufficient to address the risks associated with children's access to digital platforms.

"Hindi natin maaaring balewalain ang epekto ng walang kontrol na digital exposure sa mga kabataan. Panahon nang tiyakin kung sapat ang ating mga polisiya upang maprotektahan sila," Gatchalian said.

The Senate leader said the proposed inquiry seeks to gather recommendations from government agencies, educators, child development experts, and technology stakeholders to help formulate responsive legislation that promotes children's welfare while ensuring responsible use of digital platforms.

If approved, the Senate investigation is expected to assess the role of online games, social media, and other digital content in shaping children's behavior, with the goal of strengthening safeguards against online risks and preventing future incidents of school violence.
