Senate President Sherwin "Win" Gatchalian has described the recent incidents of violence in schools as a “crisis,” following another stabbing incident involving a Grade 9 student from Julio Ledesma National High School in San Carlos City.
Gatchalian expressed alarm over the latest incident, noting that it occurred while the country is still reeling from the recent school shooting in Tacloban City. He warned that the increasing number of violent incidents in educational institutions poses a serious threat to student safety and well-being.
According to the Senate leader, the government and the public must not allow violence in schools to become normalized. He stressed the need for immediate action to address the growing problem and ensure that schools remain safe spaces for learning.
In response, Gatchalian said he will file a Senate resolution seeking an inquiry into the recent incidents of school violence. The proposed investigation aims to assess the extent of the problem and identify measures that can strengthen campus security and protect students.
The latest stabbing incident adds to a series of violent episodes reported since the opening of School Year 2026–2027. Prior to the Tacloban shooting, two separate stabbing incidents were also reported in schools in Cavite earlier this month.
Gatchalian emphasized that understanding the root causes of these incidents and implementing effective preventive measures are crucial to safeguarding students and restoring public confidence in the country's education system.
