A lawmaker filed a resolution seeking clemency for Mary Jane Veloso on the grounds of justice, protection for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), and humanitarian reasons.
House Resolution 583 was authored by House Assistant Minority Leader and Gabriela Women’s party-list Rep. Sarah Elago, who believes that Veloso—clearly a victim of trafficking, the lawmaker said—should be granted justice and freed after 15 years of wrongful imprisonment, reported RH 12 Milky Rigonan.
Elago said that demanding clemency for Veloso does not disregard the law. Rather, it is a humanitarian act recognized by the Constitution, and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has both the power and responsibility to address such injustice toward a fellow countryman.
It is time to end Veloso’s suffering, Elago said. She added that women will continue to stand firm against human trafficking and policies that force Filipinos to risk their lives overseas.
At present, Veloso is under the custody of the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) in Mandaluyong. Before her repatriation, she was on death row for nearly 15 years in Indonesia over drug charges.
