The Department of Energy (DOE) is reviewing the mandated fuel price adjustments being implemented by the government following complaints from some oil companies.

Energy Secretary Sharon Garin said the agency is working to balance the price cap policy to ensure that gasoline stations remain financially viable and do not shut down operations.

“We are already looking at the pricing mechanism we have adopted when we prescribed the price adjustments. It was based on the reported calculations also of the oil companies. Now, we are reviewing our current policy on easing up on the strict rules of the DOE.”

Garin said the measure aims to make government policy fair for both the oil industry and consumers amid a global oil crisis.

She emphasized that the DOE recognizes that oil companies have varying suppliers, freight costs, and other charges that affect retail pricing.

However, she said the agency will step in to review and clarify pricing when certain costs appear unclear or show significant disparities.

“DOE remains vigilant about our supply and closely monitoring the activities of our oil companies. The DOE is ready to procure more once the level is, let’s say, not comfortable anymore.”

The government has been setting minimum rollback levels and maximum price increases for petroleum products over the past four weeks under a state of national energy emergency.
