Commuters using the Pasig River Ferry Service can now access free Wi-Fi at ferry stations and onboard vessels, following the launch of a government-backed connectivity program aimed at improving public transport services in Metro Manila.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), in partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), rolled out the free internet service under the government’s Free Public Internet Access Program.

The initiative was formally launched during a ceremony at the San Joaquin Ferry Station in Pasig City, led by DICT Secretary Henry Aguda and MMDA Chairman Romando Artes, alongside local officials.

Authorities said internet speeds can reach 40 to 60 Mbps during off-peak hours and around 10 to 20 Mbps during rush hour, allowing commuters to stay connected while traveling.

The free Wi-Fi is available not only at ferry terminals but also on several boats operating along the Pasig River, including Mutya 1, Mutya 2, and Vicente.

Stations with Wi-Fi access include Lambingan, PUP, Sta. Ana, Maybunga, Pinagbuhatan, San Joaquin, Hulo, Valenzuela, Kalawaan, Guadalupe, Quinta, and Escolta.

Aguda said the project reflects the growing importance of internet connectivity in daily life, particularly with the rise of remote work and digital services. Artes added that the feature is intended to enhance commuter experience and encourage more people to use the ferry system, which remains free of charge.

The MMDA also announced plans to expand the ferry fleet with additional electric-powered boats to accommodate more passengers while promoting environmentally sustainable transport options amid rising fuel costs.

Separately, the agency said it is coordinating with the DICT to install free Wi-Fi in public parks across Metro Manila as part of broader efforts to improve digital access in public spaces.
