From public service to polo stardom, at 52, former lawmaker and sports patron Mikee Romero has carved out another milestone—this time on the global polo stage.

Romero became the first Filipino to break into the Top 25 of the World Polo Tour amateur rankings, cementing his place among the sport’s elite and emerging as the highest-ranked Southeast Asian player on the prestigious list.

The achievement marks a significant breakthrough not only for Romero but also for Philippine polo, a discipline long dominated by traditional powerhouses from Argentina, the United States, and Europe.

His rise in the rankings underscores years of dedication to the sport while balancing multiple roles in public service and national defense.

A former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Romero is widely known as a staunch sports patron who has supported various athletic programs and grassroots initiatives across the country.

Beyond politics and sports leadership, he also serves as an active reservist of the Philippine Air Force.

In recognition of his historic feat, Romero received a special citation from the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) during its annual Awards Night held at the Diamond Hotel last February 16.

The PSA honored Romero for breaking barriers in international polo and for elevating the Philippines’ presence in the global equestrian scene.

His Top 25 ranking is seen as a testament to perseverance, discipline, and sustained excellence—especially remarkable given the physically demanding nature of the sport.

Romero’s achievement sends a strong message that age is no obstacle to competing at the highest levels. More importantly, it highlights the growing footprint of Filipino athletes in sports traditionally considered niche in the region.

As he continues to compete internationally, Romero not only represents the country on horseback but also inspires a new generation of Filipino athletes to pursue excellence beyond conventional boundaries.
