The International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has suspended the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) with immediate effect following what it described as serious governance concerns and alleged violations of its Code of Ethics.
In a statement released Friday, May 29, the FIVB Board of Administration said the decision was made in accordance with its disciplinary regulations as an investigation by the independent FIVB Ethics Panel remains ongoing.
The global governing body said the suspension was necessary to “safeguard the sport, ensure athletes are prioritised, and uphold long-term development commitments” for volleyball in the Philippines.
Despite what it called continued diplomatic efforts to resolve issues within the national federation, the FIVB said it was compelled to take action amid concerns over the organization’s leadership and operations.
To ensure continuity, the FIVB appointed an ad hoc committee to temporarily oversee the affairs of the PNVF. The committee will be led by FIVB Executive Committee member Hila Asanuma and includes FIVB officials and legal representatives.
The group has been tasked with maintaining stability in Philippine volleyball, supporting the participation of national team athletes in international competitions, and ensuring the successful hosting of the upcoming Women’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL) stop in the country.
The FIVB also said it has outlined a “clear and constructive path” for the PNVF to regain full standing, though no timeline was specified.
The suspension comes amid broader concerns surrounding the federation’s management of events. The Philippine Sports Commission has reportedly also halted funding support and engagements involving the PNVF, citing a breach of contractual obligations linked to the Beach Pro Tour event in Nuvali and what it described as operational misalignment with organizers.
As of posting, the PNVF has yet to issue an official statement regarding the suspension.
The FIVB said it remains committed to protecting the integrity of the sport in the Philippines and supporting its long-term development at all levels.
