The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported a peaceful first day of Simbang Gabi across the country, with no untoward incidents recorded during the start of the traditional dawn masses of Filipino Catholics.
In a report by Edniel Parrosa, Acting PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said that the calm and orderly observance reflects the preparedness and effective deployment of police units nationwide.
The PNP had earlier placed its forces on heightened alert as part of its security preparations for the holiday season.
Authorities expect millions of churchgoers to attend the nine-day Misa de Gallo, including anticipated nightly masses. More than 19,000 churches nationwide have been identified and are being closely monitored by the police.
Over 100,000 police personnel and augmentation forces have been deployed to churches and other places of convergence starting December 15.
The PNP also reminded the public, especially young attendees, to observe proper conduct. The police warned that individuals aged 15 and above may be held criminally liable for unlawful acts, particularly those commonly associated with riots or disturbances.
