The firearms used by the student-shooters who opened fire in a classroom in San Jose National High School, Tacloban City belonged to a police officer and a security guard, disclosed the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday.
During a press briefing, PNP Spokesperson PCol. Allen Rae Co told the media that the firearms—a 9mm glock and a caliber .38 armscor—was issued to a female police officer and a security guard, respectively.
“The firearms used were a 9mm glock and a caliber .38 armscor. Upon verification, the 9mm glock belongs, or was issued to a policewoman assigned in PRO-8. The subject policewoman is now under investigation and placed under custody of the regional police office. While the caliber .38 revolver is registered to a security agency in Cebu City,” said Co.
It was said that the 14-year-old shooter was the female Police Regional Office 8 (PRO-8) officer’s nephew, which is how he gained access to the firearm.
“Ito pa po ang chini-check natin and if proven that (they) were remiss in the custody and safekeeping of the firearms, they will be charged accordingly,” Co said.
Meanwhile, the PNP are still confirming with the security agency which guard specifically owns the caliber .38 revolver used by the older of the two shooters.
There were a total of 10 victims from the shooting incident: three were killed, three more wounded, and four injured while attempting to flee the scene in a “panic.” Co did not account for the tenth casualty.
Co said that they have arrested the suspects, classified as children in conflict with the law (CICLs)—alias “Rod,” age 15, and alias “Nash,” only 14. Both were from the said school.
The police are still verifying whether the two had specific targets and if the targets were in the classroom they fired at, as the primary angle being investigated is a “bullying grudge” motive.
