As Fire Prevention Month is observed this March, authorities warn of a rise in fire incidents across the country, particularly in Metro Manila. From January to February 2026, cases increased by nearly 8% compared to last year, reaching around 2,699 incidents—underscoring the need for heightened awareness as the dry season sets in.

In an interview on DZRH TV's Expert's Opinion, Joven Lahot, a fire volunteer and Vice President of the Navotas Midtown Fire Prevention Unit, highlighted the crucial role of volunteers in emergencies.

“Ang isang fire volunteer po ay isa sa mga katuwang ng BFP [Bureau of Fire Protection] kung saan maaaring rumesponde sa mga fire incidents,” he said, adding that they often act as first responders in communities.

Beyond firefighting, volunteers are trained to respond to various emergencies, including floods and rescue operations. According to Lahot, preparation and training are essential: “Bago po pumasok sa aming grupo, kailangan pong magkaroon ng basic firefighting training, kung saan tinuturo kung paano gumamit ng kagamitan ng isang bumbero at kung paano kumilos sa operasyon.”

Despite limited resources, volunteers continue their work driven by service. “Ang aim lang naman po namin dito ay ang passion namin—kung saan makatulong kami sa iba, sa community namin, at sa kalapit naming residente. At makuha rin namin ang fulfillment sa sarili namin,” he shared.

He noted that many fires stem from preventable causes, particularly faulty electrical wiring. “Most common po… yung mga electric wirings… yung mga nagbubuhol-buhol na wires at extensions,” Lahot explained. Unattended candles, lighters, and illegal electrical connections also contribute to fire risks.

Lahot also reminds the public to stay calm and report immediately during emergencies: “Ang una pong dapat gawin, maging kalmado… at i-report sa pinakamalapit na barangay o bumbero.”

Amid the rising number of fire incidents, everyone is reminded to stay cautious and ensure their homes are safe to prevent tragedy.
